The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, has disclosed that eight individuals are currently standing trial at the Kwadaso Circuit Court for offences connected to illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.

Speaking on Friday, Mr. Kofi Buah emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to the fight against illegal mining, which continues to pose a serious threat to the country’s environment, water bodies, and communities.

“Eight persons are standing trial at the Kwadaso Circuit Court for offences relating to illegal mining,” the Minister confirmed. He reiterated that the Ministry, in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, remains resolute in ensuring that perpetrators face the full rigours of the law.

The crackdown comes amid intensified national efforts to curb the surge in illegal mining activities that have devastated farmlands and polluted major rivers. The Ministry has pledged to strengthen monitoring mechanisms and prosecute offenders to serve as a deterrent to others engaging in similar acts.

Authorities have urged local communities to support the government’s efforts by reporting illegal mining operations in their areas. The trials are expected to send a strong signal that the era of unchecked illegal mining is over.
